I explore the ecology of plant-insect interactions with methodologies of chemical analysis, behavioral bioassays and molecular biology. Recent research projects focused on, but were not limited to a local heteropteran species, bean bug (Riptortus pedestris) and the interactions with its major host plant, soybean (Glycine max). I am currently a Ph.D. candidate at Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), but actively looking to expand my research boundaries. Ongoing projects include 1) chemical communications in the bean bug, especially role of cuticular compounds as sex pheromone, 2) dismantling attractive and repulsive behavior of the bean bug using deep-learning based computer vision, 3) validation of attraction cue and repellent in soybean fields as an application of integrated pest management (IPM). Recently, I have started a project a role of gut symbiont Caballeronia on the chemical communication (e.g. pheromone production and olfactory perception) of the bean bug. The bean bugs acquire its beneficial gut symbiont, Caballeronia horizontally from the environment at early growth stage. Unlike other truebugs the bean bugs can also develop and reproduce without this symbiont, which makes the bean bug-Caballeronia such a great study system to investigate the role of gut symbionts on host physiology.
